Daddy weekend

Mama traveled to Boston to celebrate the big 4-Oh My with Auntie Mer, leaving Daddy with a lot of time to fill. The three of us kept as busy as we could to lessen the sorrow of no Mama.

The kitchen is always a good place to pass time and Veronica is growing into quite the little chef. She rolled out the pizza dough for dinner all by herself. The next day Veronica wanted orange juice, but we were fresh out. She suggested we make our own and I tried to explain that we only had clementines. That didn't stop her. It takes a lot of clementines to get half a glass of juice, but it was worth it. Or maybe it was just a consequence of getting to squeeze all those juicy, messy clementines.

We picked out seeds and planted our vegetable garden. Gardening isn't the best activity for little kids, but Veronica has been through it enough time to know what to expect. Simon just wanted to dig. Building a sandbox is going to have to be a future activity if those seeds are going to stand a chance.

Daddy also got to see swim lessons for the first time in months and Veronica had a big surprise. Veronica is full on swimming with big strokes all the way across the pool. Simon loves wearing his goggles and gets a 15 minute floating lesson. He's more comfortable in the water than Veronica was at the same age. It won't be long for him.

When the final day of the weekend came, Daddy pulled out the big guns. Doughnuts! Usually reserved for Father's Day, the three of us headed to Top Pot on Sunday morning. Veronica selected the chocolate with rainbow sprinkles and Simon had the chocolate cake doughnut. The normally finicky Simon found his soul mate. He held on tight and refused to share or even trade. He drilled the entire thing. So proud.

Skiing

Veronica learned to ski this winter. Weekly trips to Snoqualmie on Sunday afternoons with Daddy did the trick. The first day was in the mid 30's, raining, and Veronica's teacher failed to actually provide any lessons... and she loved it. The temperature stayed below freezing for the rest of the lessons. It was a little too cold on the final day and poor Veronica learned the pain of hands and feet thawing after 2 hours in the cold. In between it being too warm and too cold, Veronica was perfect on the mountain. She was a great student and great sport. The constant doling of candy may have played a small part.

The long hours on the road, sometimes sitting still while the DOT did avalanche control on the pass, won't be missed. Thank goodness for the Subaru. It earned it's place in the driveway this winter.
